Since self-care was named as a breakout trend by Apple in 2017, meditation apps such as Calm and Headspace have exploded in popularity, and become an integral part of our me time routines. There are well over 1M tags on Instagram with #SelfCareSunday, ranging from home spas, yoga retreats, manicures, and nutrition. But another way to show yourself some love, and help with anxiety, includes masturbation.

At the start of the pandemic, the sexual wellness industry experienced a boom in business. It makes total sense, right? Most people felt an impact on their mental health, thanks to all of the uncertainty surrounding the health crisis, and were confined at home with no end in sight. For those living alone, they were suddenly dealing with the effects of isolation.

There are several benefits to masturbating, which releases the chemicals dopamine and oxytocin. Dr. Janet Brito, a psychologist, certified sex therapist, and founder of the Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health in Honolulu, Hawaii describes masturbation as “...a form of stress relief or self-intimacy—an escape from the mundane, or a form of self-soothing. It is a perfectly natural and healthy approach to promote emotional regulation, enhance your mood, and be with yourself. After a busy day, masturbation gives you an opportunity to take a break from the pressures of life to reconnect with yourself—to chill, and relax.” It can also lead to better sex with a partner, as knowing how to orgasm by yourself can teach you about what turns you on.

On top of the pleasure aspect, masturbation is also a low-cost way to engage in self-care, making it something that everyone can benefit from regardless of race, sexuality and income. If you do choose to invest, there’s a wide selection of sex toys to choose from that includes low-cost options.
